J.K. Rowling – The Casual Vacancy
Disclaimer: All the Harry Potters are 10s and that’s the end of discussion!
And so you naturally think that this book is going to stink, as it’s supposed to be about something completely different and J.K. is not a serious novel writer and there is no way in the hell that she can pull that off. And so you naturally start to read it with disgust and as biased as one can be. You try to see her trying too hard to be serious and write “BIG” novel. And so you (naturally) play savvy eloquent gentleman (you even consider wearing a top hat for this occasion) and tell snobbishly to your wife that “it’s not bad, but she should have stick with fairy-tales…” Only she shouldn’t! J.K. is a f***king ROCK-STAR and she can’t write a bad book!
She knows people way too well, she can play with your emotions the way no one can and she is able to see the world with the eyes you want to borrow and never return. She seems to be able to see good in everybody (remember, even Voldemort turned out to be a poor guy as he never got to know love)…
Careful though, this one is heavy one!
Favourite line: “You must accept the reality of other people. You think that reality is up for negotiation, that we think it’s whatever you say it is. You must accept that we are as real as you are; you must accept that you are not God.”
